By situating Auschwitz within the larger narrative of the Holocaust and linking it to Brazil’s own historical and societal struggles, this chapter advocates for a globally conscious memory that emphasizes the Holocaust’s universal lessons while addressing local realities.. Barbed wire is directly connected to Auschwitz in terms of historical memory, becoming one of its main symbols. It has become an icon of that inhumane imprisonment and the entire Holocaust. Several former prisoners, in their testimony, spoke of what that barbed wire and electrified fence represented, from Primo Levi to Terracina and beyond.

Professor van Pelt, teaching about concentration camps and barbed wire. [/caption]Looking at Auschwitz from the outside also forces one to think about the role of concentration camps in war. The Nazis and Communists believed fervently in the usage of concentration camps, Robert Jan explain to us, as a means of gaining control through torture.. Electrically charged barbed-wire fences surrounded both the concentration camp and the killing center. Guards, equipped with machine guns and automatic rifles, stood in the many watchtowers.
